Rough draft

Hula
hula is a very beautiful, but confusing dance. People all over the world know hawaii as the place where hula is performed, because it has been a big part of Hawaii's culture for so long. Hula also has a very long past. The history of Hula is also the history of Hawaii, because hula has played a big role inn the re-birth of Hawaii's culture. The history of hula has changed over the years due to foreign influence.
Hula kahiko was the ancient style of hula, it was used to tell a story through dance and chanting in hawaiian. the dancers had to be properly dressed because kahiko was a very sacred dance. the hawaiian people claim that the first person to ever dance hula was a god. foreigners started to reach the islands, and along with them they brought a new culture, and almost demanded everyone to follow their religion, and they banned hula because it was worshiping a god that was not their god. Hula was banned for about 50 years until king Kalakaua knew that hula was a big part of  Hawaii's history  so he found a way to bring it back. That is why he is now called the Merry monarch.
Foreigners had to put their input in and now the hula can be performed by men and women. More cultures are now in hula halaus learning hula, because they are intrigued by the movements of the hula. Hula used to be only in hawaii, but now it has spread throughout the world, even all the way down to Japan. In fact one of the oldest hula competitions, the merry monarch festival invites halaus globally, and if you watch it you can see that there are many different ethnic groups that dance in it. This is good for for hawaii, because it gets them on the map, because the hula is now an international thing instead of it just being in hawaii, it is Hawaii's gift to the world.
Due to all of the national attention the hula is now performed another way called hula auana. this is the more modern type of hula, it is not as strict as kahiko, because auana is more is more for entertainment. One way that it is different then kahiko is because it is performed with the more new aged instruments, like the bass guitar, and the acoustic guitar. Another way they are different is because instead of chanting while they are dancing, they have someone sing while they dance.
So the foreigners came and changed everything, but they probably changed it for the best. That is for you to decide. But this is how the history of the hula was changed over the years due to foreign influence: They banned the hula for over 50 years, they introduced it to the rest of the world, and they created a new type of hula.

  1. I Like the essay overall, but the first sentence doesnt really pull you towards the essay, so i would change that. Also the conclusion doesnt really sound like a conclusion. A conclusion should wrap up the entire essay, and yours kinda sounds like another paragraph.
